President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Ameen as Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, following the resignation of Thoriq Ibrahim from the Ministry of Tourism and Environment.

The appointment forms part of a wider cabinet reshuffle announced after 10 ministers stepped down earlier on Tuesday.

Ameen, who has been serving as Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation in President Muizzu’s administration since it took office in November 2023, now takes over the tourism portfolio, which is one of the country’s key economic sectors.

Before joining the Cabinet, Ameen held senior positions at Island Aviation Services and has remained closely involved with the transport and civil aviation sectors throughout the current administration.

His appointment makes him the third tourism minister under the current administration. Ibrahim Faisal was initially appointed to the post when the government assumed office in November 2023. The ministry was later merged in February 2025 with the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy to form the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, with Thoriq Ibrahim subsequently appointed to lead the merged portfolio.
